426MONTES, P. et al.Mastitis Test (CMT), unida a la recolecciónmediante la anamnesis de la información relativa alrendimiento y actitud de los animales, permitió estableceren cada rebaño 3 grupos: 1) con sintomatologíaclínicamente manifiesta, 2) sin síntomas clínicosy CMT +, 3) clínicamente sanos y CMT -.De todos los animales se obtuvieron muestras deleche, a las que se añadieron unas gotas de azidiolcomo bacteriostático, y de sangre, estas últimas contenidasen tubos de vacío con heparina de litio.Todas las muestras se conservaron a temperatura derefrigeración hasta el momento de su análisis, 24horas más tarde.En leche se determinaron los recuentos de célulassomáticas, con un autoanalizador Fossomatic 250(Foss Electric, Dinamarca) y de bacterias, medianteun contador Bactoscan 8000 (Foss Electric, Dinamarca),ambos basados en microscopía de fluorescencia.En sangre se midió la concentración de hemoglobinay la actividad de GSHPx, mediante losmétodos de Van Kampen Ziljstra (1961) y de Pagliay Valentine (1967) respectivamente. Para la determinacióndel enzima se empleó un kit comercial(Randox, Reino Unido). En ambos casos, las lecturasse realizaron en un espectrofotómetro ShimazduUV 160 A.La comparación estadística de las medias de losdistintos parámetros entre los tres grupos de animalesse realizó mediante un análisis de varianza.RESULTADOS Y DISCUSIONLas actividades medias de GSHPx encontradas enlos tres grupos pueden considerarse adecuadas, segúnvalores obtenidos en nuestra zona y condiciones deexplotación (Andrés et al., 1994). Estas actividades,expresadas en UI/g Hb, aparecen en la figura 1. Lasmás altas se detectaron en los animales mamíticos,aunque no se observaron diferencias significativas(P > 0,05) entre los diferentes grupos. Este resultadose contradice, aparentemente, con el efecto protectordel Se frente a las mamitis apuntado por otrosautores (Hogan et al., 1992; Politis et al., 1995),aunque puede explicarse teniendo en cuenta, enprimer lugar, la multitud de factores implicados enel desarrollo y mantenimiento de la infección de laubre y, en segundo lugar, por la inexistencia devalores de GSHPx indicativos de deficiencia de Seen los animales de nuestro experimento.Por su parte, los recuentos de células somáticas(en células por ml) y de bacterias (en bacterias porml), representados en las figuras 2 y 3 respectivamente,fueron mucho más altos en los animales conmamitis clínica y subclínica que en las cabras sanas.En estas últimas los valores obtenidos para estosparámetros coinciden con los encontrados por Paapey Capuco (1997) para cabras sin infección intramamaria.Entre los animales con mamitis clínicas ysubclínicas no se apreciaron diferencias significativas,aunque si entre estos dos grupos y los animalessanos (P < 0,05), lo que confirma la validezdel uso del California Mastitis Test como métododiagnóstico de campo en el ganado caprino lechero.Debido a la ausencia de diferencias significativasentre las medias de actividad de GSHPx de lascabras de los tres grupos, se investigó la relaciónentre la actividad del enzima y los parámetros analizadosen la leche, mediante un estudio de correlación,en el que se obtuvieron los coeficientes r apartir de los valores individuales de actividad delenzima y de los recuentos de células somáticas y debacterias en cada uno de los grupos por separado(Fig. 4 y 5).Los valores de índice de correlación r obtenidosentre GSHPx y células fueron negativos sólo en losgrupos 1 y 3 y carecieron de significación estadísticaen todos, aunque apuntan a una vinculaciónentre la actividad de GSHPx y el contenido encélulas de la leche. Nuestros resultados contrastancon los de otros autores, como Atroshi (1985) enganado caprino y Klawonn et al. (1996) en ganadobovino, quienes encontraron menores recuentos decélulas somáticas en animales que habían sidosuplementados con selenio. En nuestro caso, losbuenos niveles de GSHPx de los rebaños caprinosutilizados pueden explicar esta ausencia de significaciónen esta correlación.Respecto a la correlación entre actividad sanguíneade GSHPx y recuento de bacterias, todos loscoeficientes r fueron negativos, aunque sólo contaroncon significación estadística en el grupo control.A pesar de ello, queda perfectamente reflejadala existencia de una relación inversa entre los nivelesdel enzima que contiene Se y los recuentos de bacterias,que estaría basada en el efecto del Se sobrelas células inmunocompetentes a nivel de la ubre(Sordillo et al., 1993; Smith et al., 1997).La ausencia de correlación entre los parámetrosanalizados puede explicarse por la alta actividad deGSHPx encontrada en todos los grupos. Por ello,sería importante comprobar si la realización de esteestudio en cabras que consumieran una ración conmenos selenio permitiría hallar una correlación másalta, lo que serviría como fundamento para prevenirlas mamitis y mejorar la calidad de la leche en
