Ciencia y Tecnología Agroforestal, Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha, 02071, AlbaceteRESUMENEn esta comunicación analizamos la estrategia de inversión en hijos e hijas de las madres de muflón en funciónde la edad, peso y condición corporal de las mismas. Hay dos teorías antagonistas que explican comolas madres de mamíferos ungulados poligínicos deberían invertir sus recursos reproductivos. Debido a quelos mejores machos tienen una descendencia mucho más numerosa que la de las mejores hembras, y debidoa que su éxito reproductivo está influido por la cantidad de recursos aportados por la madre, Trivers y Willard(1973) predijeron que las madres con más recursos reproductivos deberían tener prioritariamente hijos. Porel contrario, debido a que las hijas en estas especies se quedan con la madre y compiten con ella por el alimento,la teoría de Competición por los Recursos Locales predice que las mejores madres deberían invertirfundamentalmente en hembras, dado que sólo las madres en mejores condiciones pueden permitirse la competenciaque suponen las hijas. Nuestra comunicación muestra que, a pesar de que los recursos reproductivosde las muflonas aumentan con la edad y el peso, las hembras muestran una gran tendencia a producir hijas alaumentar su edad, y una tendencia débil a producir hijos al aumentar el peso para hembras de una mismaedad.Palabras clave: muflón, Ovis musimon, selección de sexo, inversión parental, peso.INTRODUCCIÓNFisher (1930) indicó que los padres deberíangastar la misma proporción de recursos en producirindividuos de ambos sexos. Cuando machos y hembrasno cuestan lo mismo de producir (los machosson más pesados al nacer, crecen más deprisa, etc.),esta equivalencia lleva a producir menos individuosdel sexo más costoso. Hay una abundante evidenciade que muchos mamíferos producen más descendenciade uno de los dos sexos (revisado porClutton-Brock e Iason, 1986). Sin embargo, no seha encontrado una estrategia consistente y general(Charnov, 1982; Clutton-Brock e Iason, 1986).Existen dos hipótesis antagonistas sobre la estrategiade inversión en un sexo u otro. Dado que losmejores machos tienen más descendencia que lasmejores hembras y dado que el éxito reproductivode los hijos está influido por la cantidad de cuidadosy recursos parentales (Clutton-Brock et al., 1982a;Clutton-Brock et al., 1984), Trivers y Willard (1973)indicaron que las madres con más recursos disponiblespara invertir en su descendencia deberíaninvertir en hijos. Por el contrario, Clark (1978) ySilk (1983) postularon que tales hembras deberíaninvertir en hijas, puesto que en los mamíferos poligínicoslas hijas se quedan en el territorio maternoy compiten con sus madres por la comida, reduciendosu éxito reproductivo (Clutton-Brock et al.,1982b), lo que se denomina teoría de Competiciónpor los Recursos Locales (CRL). Williams (1979)desarrolló y perfeccionó ambas teorías al postularque las hembras deberían invertir a la vez en el sexomás caro y en camadas mayores conforme aumentaransus recursos (por ejemplo, produciendo lasecuencia 1HÆ1MÆ2HÆM-HÆ2M, etc., en elcaso de que los machos sean más caros de producir).La literatura en varias especies de ungulados silvestresapoya ambas teorías y la modificación deWilliams mostrando evidencia a favor de una u otra,no sólo entre especies diferentes y artículos dife-
