Such storieshave convinced most Americans and most immigrants that hardwork (and luck) can bring the economic success immigrants seekin the US.There are three other reasons why there are fewer US worriesabout integrating immigrants in the US than in many Europeancountries - smaller government, fiexibility, and stronganti-discrimination policies:1. Government plays a smailer role in the US economy andlabor market, so fewer decisions are required aboutwhich jobs are restricted to citizens. Government employs116 of US workers (23 million of 137 million in 2008),but only the (non-postal) federal government, whichhas 2 million employees, generally requires US citizenship.State and local governments employing 3 and 15million workers, respectively, usualiy require legal immigrantstatus, but not US citizenship.Legal immigrants may join the Armed Forces, and about8,000 a year do. They may apply for naturalization ontheir first day of active service, and become US citizensafter six months of service, with the military coveringfees. in a bid to attract recruits with more education andforeign language skilis, the US Army in 2009 announcedthat it would allow up to 1,000 foreigners in the US ontemporary student visas to enlist under the Military AccessionsVital to the National Interest program, the firsttime since the Vietnam War that non-immigrant visitorsin the US at least two years have been allowed to enlist.About 82 percent of the 80,000 Army recruits in 2008had high school dipiomas; the Army hopes to attract foreignstudents enrolled in US universities.2.
