On thebasis of his fleldwork, Wahlbeck (1999: 49-50) says that chainmigration is the reason why they chose to migrate ta Britain.People moved because they had friends or relatives who hadpreviously arrived in Britain, often knowing from the outset thatthey were gaing there. Unlike Germany, which had imposed itsvisa requirement for Turkish citizens in 1980 as part of tightercontrols againstthem, Turkish citizens could enterthe UK withouta visa. However, as a result of the infiux, a visa requirement wasimposed by Britain on 23 June 1989.As shown in Figure 2, the number of asylum applications bymigrants from Turkey remained considerable through the 19905peaking in year 2000 although it has since been dropping.Figure 2: Applications for asylum and initial refusal ofasylum related status (excluding dependants)8000700060005000400030002000100001990 1992 1994 1996 1998 2000 2002 2004 2006 2008-- - Asylum applications in İlie UK by diizens of TurkeyRefusais of asylum related statusSource: Home Offlce Immigratfon and Asylum Statisticsas a student: Bugdaycay v Secretary of State for the Home Department[1987]A.C. 514.310
