The theoretical and empirical relevance of theories of acculturation have been demonstrated to in a
variety of contexts. Multiculturalism is not an alternative to acculturation models. In fact, it can be
understood as an extension of this construct to the society in which natives and migrants share
their day-to-day experiences. Multiculturalism implies the integration, not the assimilation, of
cultural-minority citizens, and therefore suggests that the environment accepts cultural differences.
This study presents the validation of a questionnaire assessing perceptions of members of one
community (cultural-groups or natives) about how members of both communities should act
toward each other.

Translation and inter-cultural use of tests constitute major threats to the validity of scores
interpretation. The traditional translation method has been based on backward translation
(translation into the target language and retranslation to the source language). This method has
been criticized for various reasons. Other translation methods have been developed to avoid its
flaws: the conceptual translation method is first based on meaning, while the decentering method
is based on simultaneous productions of different languages versions. This study compares the
effect of these three methods on cultural and linguistic equivalence of a scale translated in France
and in Quebec.

4111.1 Formulating multidimensional item response models using the SAS NLMIXED

This study demonstrates how multidimensional item response models can be formulated using the
SAS NLMIXED procedure through several examples: (a) multidimensional models of Rasch
family, (b) the testlet model, (c) the bundle model, and (d) the missing data model. All of these
models belong to the generalized linear mixed model so that NLMIXED can be used to estimate
the parameters. Through simulation, it is found that NLMIXED recovers the generating
parameters very well.
