2028.129 Effects of trait anxiety on memory-based categorization: An event-related potential

The present research measured event-related potentials to examine the contribution of memory
retrieval processes to categorization in high anxious individuals. According to previous reports
concerning a facilitation of familiarity-related frontal activity especially for negative items in
anxious group, we focused attention on the relationship between the frontal component and the
extent of the intrusion of automatic process to analytic judgments depending on emotional valence
of items. Implications of effects of trait anxiety on behavioral performance and ERP data are
discussed in view of memory systems mediating categorization and recognition.

Left inferior prefrontal cortex/ Broca’s area has traditionally been linked to word production.
Right inferior prefrontal cortex showed increasing functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI)
activity, and meanwhile his Broca’s area showed decreasing, when a right-handed male stroke
patient could not produce a word, but wanted to speak. fMRI activity was contrary when he could
speak, his Broca’s area showed increasing activity, however, hidden in the memory area of word
production, the counterpart in the right hemisphere decreased. We argue that there are many
hidden memory areas of category-specific higher function in the brain.

Although Collins and Quillian set up the hierarchic model of semantic memory by the way of
information processing by computer, few cases of neuropsychology were supported. The
hierarchic attribute of words of female patient recovering from infarctions of the basal ganglia is
reported. She denoted a jersey, or an article of underwear, or a pair of trousers etc, with word of
“clothing”. She could not say cabbage, spinach, and cucumber etc. except “vegetable”. She forgot
first names of three sons and called them “son”. Concrete words which were taken place by upper
abstract words were showed by this case.

Physical therapists and ophthalmologists have identified a general deficit in proprioception of
postural and ocular muscles named Postural Deficiency Syndrome (PDS). PDS, leading to varied
patterns of functional disabilities, begins to be suspected in neuropsychological deficits. To our
knowledge, no study has provided quantitative evidence for the clinical diagnosis. Our work tried
to assess accurately the PDS. We used a force platform to record center of pressure displacements,
optoelectronic systems to measure segment positions, and a calibrated image analysis system to
evaluate podal support. Our results showed body asymmetries and postural instabilities allowing
us to specify requirements for clinical evaluation.
