What society perceives to be a person's race/ethnicity may have a very powerful influence on the
individual's racial/ethnic self-identification and identity formation. With the growing population of
multiracial/multi-heritage individuals in the world, counselors and educators need to be prepared
to help multiraical/multi-heritage individuals to meet this daily challenge.
5083.113 The pursuit of self-constructed goals in Chinese societies, Wei Chih-Fen, Taiwan,
China
In Chinese societies, people are expected to put priority on role responsibility over personal goals.
Thus, the pursuit of self-constructed goals is encouraged only after individuals fulfill those
social-constructed goals first. In this study, the main purpose was to examine the relationship
between self-constructed and social-constructed goals above. Subjects had to respond to three
scenarios. In each scenario, the self-constructed goal might be compatible or incompatible with
social-constructed goal. When these two kinds of goals were compatible, it enhanced more
positive emotions, and made the actor get more face and social support from family members. As
the actor chose self-constructed goals instead of social-constructed ones, he might lose face and
family’s support.
5083.114 A study on psychological qualities of art managers, Li Shaodong, Huawei Ma, China,

The study is conducted in three parts: 1.Interviewing 36 experienced art managers on ‘What
qualities are significant towards successful art management?’ 2. Questionnaire conducted amongst
art workers concerning ‘What qualities mark a good art manager?’ 3. Testing the above 36
experienced art managers with Cattell 16PF Questionnaire. Two conclusions can be made: first,
findings from part one and two are highly correlated with that from part 3; second, qualities
including extraversion, independence, openness to change, sensitivity and vigilance usually mark
a good art manager.
5083.115 Research on the leave-or-stay choice of college students in the time of SARS, Hong An,
Qinhua He, Lang Chen, Shuyue Zhang, Beijing Normal University, Beijing, China
This research investigates the college students' choice of leaving their campus or staying when
SARS broke out in Beijing in 2003. We used a questionnaire to get the general information. The
results show that the fear of the disease is the most crucial factor of leaving. We find differences
on temporal feelings, decision-making style, the influences of SARS on life and study, attitudes
towards colleges, and effects of social support between the students of opposite choices. The
results also show that social support plays an important part in their feelings. The causes of
differences are discussed in each section.
