4028.15 Relationships among the myers-briggs type indicator, type a behavior pattern and
personal evaluation inventory of foreign trade college students, Li Li, Danmin Miao, Fourth

Findings show that the foreign college students (N=368) were of ESTJ preference on MBTI and
appear moderately in their behavior pattern and personal evaluation. Significant differences were
found in self-esteemed and behavior pattern in gender that male students were more confident and
competitive than that of female students. Notable correlations were found that those who had high
achievement motivation and individual evaluation, while with implications of great future
specialty achievement predicated by teachers generally had a preference of ENTJ preference on
MBTI. Results give credence to personality based career counseling, excellent students training
and selection for foreign trade college students.
4028.16 Economic development and culture: Empirical evidence from 16 European countries,

The paper aims to show how the four dimensions of national cultures proposed by Hofstede
(individualism-collectivism; uncertainty avoidance; power distance; masculinity-femininity)
explain several economic development indicators of 16 European countries. The data suggest that
the countries with better indicators (human development index; growth competitiveness index;
microeconomic competitiveness index; national product per capita) are those higher in
individualism and lower in power distance and uncertainty avoidance. This empirical evidence is a
small contribution to answering to the question stated by the Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen in his
article “How does culture matter?”
4028.17 I pay back both good and bad things: Cross-cultural variations in relationship between
pro-social reciprocity and violence, Ka-yee Leung, Dov Cohen, University of Illinois,

The experiment quantitatively examined the relationship between reciprocity and honor-related
violence. Research has shown that the South and West U.S. have developed "cultures of honor", in
which insults and affronts are often met with violence. However, the same honor stance that is
associated with violent self-protection may also be associated with pro-social reciprocity as both
involve a form of "paying back." Our prediction was supported: the more participants from the
honor culture endorse honor-related violence, the more likely they are to give pro-social
reciprocity. However, a negative relationship between violence endorsement and pro-social help
was found for non-honor culture participants.
