2057.3 Stress coping behavior of Jakarta riverbank families: Resiliency of helplessness? M.P.

Researches indicate that life stress correlates with domestic violence, life stress relates to poverty,
yet people who are more resilient are more capable of handling life stress. Most families who have
lived for years on riverbanks in Jakarta live in poverty and more susceptible to life stress, yet they
remain to stay living in such condition. This seems to indicate that they are resilient in dealing
with life stress. However, others consider that some people remain to live in stressful life
condition because they feel helpless. This research is aimed to explore the way that people cope
with such situation, and whether their way of coping indicates resiliency of helplessness.

A qualitative study of 8 hospice care patients (response rate about 48 %) from diverse cultural
background over a three month period on perceptions of what constitutes ‘hope’ in their context;
the factors that maintain the sense of ‘hope’ (if present) and the role of service providers in
maintaining ‘hope’ as defined by the patients. Hope as an experiential process, a spiritual and
transcendent process, a rational process, and a relational process (Farren, Herth and Popovich,
1995) and the Herth Hope Index (1990) provided the basis for the construction of the guided
interview schedule. Results: ‘Hope’ reflected mainly a spiritual and transcendental process (future
orientation) as well as a relational process (connectedness with people).

Among the diversified stressors which may result in senior school teachers’ unadaptable behaviors
and attitudes, the lack of mutual understanding, cooperation, and the increase of distrust and
hostility among senior and junior high school teachers, students, and even parents, in addition to
the increased students’ delinquency, have badly gained increased attention these days in Japan.
Now is the time of crisis of secondary school education world in the field of clinical education.
Further research and practice on the particular targets of problematic events or stressors and then
adversity and resiliency from the clinical education point of view in this context are needed. Data
will be presented in the session.
