à ceux de la société humaine. C'est en vertu du même principe,
en insistant exclusivement sur «la persuasion et l'influence», sans au»
cune contrainte extérieure, que Barclay rejette tout emploi de
la force dans ce domaine; il serait «contrary to the Nature ofC/insf 's
Gospel and Ministry to use any Force or Violence in the gathering
of Soûls to him» (p. 491). D'après Barclay, il n'est pas admissible
de citer le Vieux Testament dans cet ordre d'idées: «those particular
Commands to the Jews, and Practices following upon them are not
a Rule for Christians», et si Paul dit que le Magistrat ne doit por»
ter l'épée en vain, «this must be understood of Moral Evils, relative
of Affairs betwixt Man and Man, not of Matters of Judgment or
Worship » (p. 495).
On voit qu'il n'y a pas ici une réprobation absolue de l'emploi
de la force dans les affaires ordinaires. Mais la force et la contrainte
extérieure n'ont rien à faire dans les «Matters of Judgment or Wor«
ship». C'est cette thèse qui est admirablement développée dans le
passage suivant, dont la hauteur de vues est exceptionnelle au XVile
siècle.
«'fis Argument, and évident Démonstration of Reason, together
with the Power of God reaching the Heart, that can change a Man's
Mind trom one Opinion to another, and not Knocks and Blows,
and such like things; which may well destroy the Body, but can
never inform the Soûl, which is a free Agent, and must either accept
or reject matters of Opinion, as they are born in upon it, by some»
thing proportional to its own nature.» (p. 497). — Ainsi la psycho»
