des Amis ont souvent et sans encourir de censure, servi dans la po»
lice («as spécial constables»), emploi où certainement le recours à la
force est inévitable. On a même affirmé — mais le fait paraît con*
trouvé — qu'il y aurait eu un régiment de Quakers dans la guerre
d'Indépendance américaine", et, d'après plusieurs témoignages, de
nombreux Quakers se seraient inscrits comme volontaires en 1914 et
1915, pendant la guerre mondiale, en tout cas pour les services auxi»
li aires de la guerre.
Le point de vue actuel des Quakers par rapport à ce problème
est admirablement exprimé par M. Braysiiaw'**: «Their testimony
is not based primarily on any objection to the use of force in it»
self, or even on the fact that war involves sufFering and loss of life ;
their root objection is based on the fact that war is both the out»
come and the cause of ambition, pride, greed, hatred and everything
that is opposed to the mind of Christ ; and that no end to be at«
tained can justify the use of such means. While not unaware that
with this, as with ail moral questions, there may be a certain bor»
derland of practical difficulty, Friends endeavor to bring ail things
to the test of the Realities which, though not seen, are eternal, and
to hold up the idéal set forth by George Fox, of living in the vir»
tue of that life which takes away the occasion of war.»
Tous les Quakers ne reconnaîtront pas l'existence du «border*
land of practical difficulty». Il y en aura certainement encore qui,
avec Jonathan Dymond'", condamnent toute guerre et tout recours
Christian could, I suppose, hâve found itself in the position which we occupied
