This 11,800 sq. ft. Public <strong>Library</strong> is part of <strong>the</strong> new “Village Center”. A partnership between <strong>the</strong> City of San Ramon, Private<br />

Developers and <strong>the</strong> Contra Costa Community College District has created a new 200,000 sq. ft. “Village Center”. The Center<br />

integrates <strong>the</strong> <strong>Library</strong> and a community center, police sub-station, child care center, as well as housing and retail/office functions<br />

with college functions.<br />

The <strong>Library</strong> is designed to be flexible and expandable. This aids in its unique mission to serve <strong>the</strong> needs of both <strong>the</strong> community and<br />

<strong>the</strong> college. The building’s adjacency to <strong>the</strong> college will allow future inclusion of a Learning Resource Center. (tBP)<br />

The <strong>Library</strong>/Learning Resource Center is <strong>the</strong> first building in a newly revisioned master plan. It is one half of a planned gateway to<br />

<strong>the</strong> campus formally facing <strong>the</strong> community. It presents an identifiable face to <strong>the</strong> community and descends into <strong>the</strong> central campus<br />

quad. The three level building houses an “interdisciplinary” Learning Resource Center that will be open 24 hours and includes a<br />

central computer plaza surrounded by math, reading, writing labs, academic tutoring and a self paced learning lab. On <strong>the</strong> upper<br />

two levels is <strong>the</strong> <strong>Library</strong> which houses 75,000 volumes and a computer carrel mezzanine. Considerable importance was placed on <strong>the</strong><br />

provision of natural light and quality of space for readers, as well as sheltering <strong>the</strong> quiet interior from <strong>the</strong> adjacent freeway. Each<br />

reading and study areas has unique qualities; some seats have window views to <strong>the</strong> distant hills, some have internal vistas across <strong>the</strong><br />

reading room, o<strong>the</strong>rs are entirely enclosed and private. (tBP)<br />

The San Diego City College <strong>Library</strong>/Learning Resource Center (LRC) reflects <strong>the</strong> College’s commitment to <strong>the</strong> building’s role as <strong>the</strong><br />

“heart” of <strong>the</strong> campus. The new 67,000 square foot, 3-story facility, perched on a hillside, commands dramatic 180 degree views of<br />

downtown San Diego and <strong>the</strong> harbor beyond. Key design considerations included organizing <strong>the</strong> library functions to allow minimal<br />

staff to operate and control it; bringing natural light into all three levels of <strong>the</strong> LRC; and creating sustainable, environmentally<br />

friendly building that was focused on low long term energy costs by employing sun-shade grills and a unique in floor heating and<br />

October 25, 2012 (Monterey Park, California) – East Los Angeles College today celebrated <strong>the</strong> opening of <strong>the</strong> college’s renovated<br />

and expanded Dr. Helen Miller Bailey <strong>Library</strong>, paid for by <strong>the</strong> Los Angeles Community College voter-funded Building Program.<br />

The <strong>Library</strong> has been expanded by nearly 12,000 square feet and features extensive new resources to facilitate learning. The <strong>Library</strong><br />

has fur<strong>the</strong>r been renovated to high sustainability standards.<br />

“Our expanded and modernized library is a fitting tribute to Dr. Helen Miller Bailey, who was one of ELAC’s most gifted and<br />

inspiring professors,” said Mr. Farley Herzek, interim president of East Los Angeles College. “In addition to <strong>the</strong> traditional library<br />

functions, <strong>the</strong> renovated Bailey <strong>Library</strong>’s resources and technology will help our students prepare for <strong>the</strong> next successful stage of<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir lives.”<br />
