CHAPITRE II.L’IDEE ENCYCLOPEDIQUE AUX XVIIIE ET XIXE SIECLESLes fonctions de l’encyclopédie : inventaire, combinatoire et critiqueAprès avoir examiné quelques uns des grands projets encyclopédiques de l’âgebaroque à celui des Lumières, je voudrais maintenant proposer quelques réflexions surles fonctions de l’encyclopédie. D’une manière ou d’une autre celle-ci se propose toujoursune réflexion raisonnée sur l’ordre du savoir, ses limites et sa logique. Avantd’ordonner les savoirs, il faut cependant en faire une liste. L’inventaire est la premièrefonction de ces ouvrages, la matrice des autres.On peut considérer que le Zedler se limite à cette opération. Il s’agit en effet,comme je l’ai déjà signalé, d’une gigantesque compilation des savoirs dans la traditiondes dictionnaires baroques et de la Polyhistorie.
