Digitazing to preserving and disseminating.
The CARMESI´s Project of the Region of
Murcia
Information and communication technologies
are effective tools that help us in the necessary
work of protecting our documental legacy. The
services based on these technologies can contribute
to a better understanding and dissemination
of this legacy without harming the original
documents. By digitalizing these documents, we
preserve the originals, we avoid moving them
unnecessarily along with the costs, we increase
accessibility, and, in short, we democratize culture.
Protecting our historical legacy without neglecting
the needs of the present moment is a
continuous challenge that carries us permanently
from the past to the future. To advance this initiative,
the CARMESÍ project is undertaking the
digitalization of the documental legacy in Murcia
that is of greatest historical and scientific interest,
with the goal of preserving it by avoiding frequent
handling and fomenting its dissemination
through the use of new digital and electronic
technologies and the capacity that the Internet
offers for transmission. This is a pioneer project
whose uniqueness is rooted in the broad institutional
participation that it welcomes, both public
and private, and the large geographical area involved,
including all municipalities in the region
of Murcia.

New Challenges for PARES (Spanish Archive
Portal): interoperability, normalization,
descriptive quality and access efficiency to
Spanish digital archival heritage
The Spanish Archive Portal – PARES (http://pares.
mcu.es) is the third generation in the digitalisation
programme of the Spanish National Archives
managed by the Ministry of Culture. It was
launched in 2007 as an integrated platform for
the dissemination of the network made up by
twelve archives located in different parts of
Spain, while providing modules and tools for
standardised description tasks, management of
archive-related public services, support and
preservation of records fonds and, above all, to
serve as the framework reflecting the archive-related
practices developed by the community of
technicians working for the Professional Body of
National Archivists.
After several decades of computer developments,
a series of new challenges have been
brought up from 2010 onwards with a view to reinforcing
the integrated information system created
to manage 280 km of shelves. These challenges
can be summarised in four main action lines, such
as the convergence and interoperation with the
European archive dissemination lines such as
APEnet (Archive Portal of Europe) and EUROPEANA
– EDL Foundation. But, above all, we are facing the
great challenge of improving and updating an
archive information system, such as PARES, under
the influence of traditional, and somewhat inertial,
techniques of the archive-managing profession. In
addition, our environment is one in which historical
recods has prevailed up to now. All this requires
an effort to adjust to an ever-changing environment
in which we live, focusing our activity on increasingly
satisfying the needs of archive users.
