Thus, once we have managed to stabilise the
PARES computer platform, with its modules to
develop fonds control and description tasks, to
manage public archive services and as a webbased
dissemination platform, with a wide stable
client community, a series of guidelines are proposed
to face new challenges:
❚ Evolution of the Spanish Archive Portal towards
the 2.0 web philosophy, whereby the
architecture of the final information reaching
the citizen or the researcher must be perfectly
usable, meeting the requirements of external
users as much as possible. This adaptation
should be applied to the work of those responsible
for archives and to the design of new
tools, while choosing the most suitable contents
for their dissemination.
❚ Convergence with international guidelines
necessarily involves the transformation of PA-
RES into an open archive system by means of
the adaptation of the information system to
the OAI-PMH model (Open Archives Initiative
– Protocol for Metadata Harvesting).
❚ Presently the digitalisation programme of
the National Archives of the Ministry of Culture
has provided a stable working platform,
which will evolve in accordance with the pace
of technological progress. Up to the present
date, priority has been given to enriching the
information system by progressively uploading
descriptive databases and digitalised image
collections. The main aim was to achieve a
great information volume to get a visible presence
on the net and create a community of
clients. It is now advisable to rethink traditional
work guidelines, focusing on improving
the quality of archive information, but regarding
its production and dissemination. In order
to do so we have reinforced our work on
814
descriptive standardisation and we have started
to introduce the quality process methodology
in our national archives. As a result, we
have managed to improve the organisation of
teamwork, the elaboration of new procedures
on the grounds of work methodologies stemming
from everyday practice and the creation
of new regulations such as the Elaboration of
Archive Points of Access of Authorities and Indexes
(2010).
❚ The evolution from the traditional services of
analogical and digital reprography, which normally
provided us with security and dissemination
copies, towards the future Centre of Digital
Preservation, which will provide the electronic
Administration services with full coverage.
Our ultimate aim is to give more social visibility
to the Archive realm within the information
society, providing quality culture contents, while
revitalising archive-related jobs in a time when
public services are required to achieve higher
quality standards and become readily accessible.
