Lurking behind such a criticism is in fact to slip into psychological reductionist thinking: If
you aren´t writing about people en masse then what you are doing is neither social nor
sociological. I would rebut this with the last breath in my feminist sociologist´s body: I
stand four-square by the conviction – fundamental to sociology – that people are social
beings through and through, and that social structures are as recoverable from single social
beings as they are from groups of them. 255
