showed the way. Thus the small magazines of this time ignited the spirit of inquiry and developed the
skill of writing in women.
This was the initial stage of writing by Bengali women. In the next generations this candle‐light
was transformed into a shooting star as a number of female literary maestros rising throughout the
20 th century who enriched Bengali literature and the arena of small publications by the touch of their
genius. In 20 th and 21 st centuries, participation of a significant number of women writers, intellectuals
and activists along with many ordinary women from different professional backgrounds have
strengthened the little magazine movement. Apart from volumes of writings, the little magazines of
modern days are nourished by the initiatives and involvement of women to a great extent. Women
have made great contribution to little magazines in different roles such as founders, publishers,
editors, writers, columnists, reviewers, cover‐designers and fund‐raisers. Thus a two‐way
compatriotship has been established between little magazines and women‐ both have developed
and enriched each other. Unfortunately, women are not recognized as good biographers. As many of
today’s celebrity authors began their career in little magazines, we hope, many of tomorrow’s
biographers will also be delivered by these small presses.
