It should be noted that Forough does not neglect classical Persian poetry. She stated her desire to
become like Hafez of Shiraz, the great Persian poet of the fourteenth century, for his eternal words
as they are beyond the limits of time and belong to all times. She is also faithful to the themes of
Persian poetry and especially the Persian mystical poetry, among which we find the themes of divine
love and mystical Union. Indeed, the ideal of Forough's love is very similar to the divine love of
Persian mystical poets like Mawlânâ Rumi: Forough dreams of a love that unites the two lovers first
and then unifies them with the world; a world where women and men are unified to the tree, water
and fire!
My whole being is a dark chant
which will carry you
perpetuating you
to the dawn of eternal growths and blossoming
in this chant I sighed, you sighed
in this chant
I grafted you to the tree to the water to the fire. (Another Birth)
Forough Farrokhzad is a woman who knows her status in the society of her time. She firmly
believes in the need for a big cultural change in Iran. She believes it is first necessary to warn women
and draw them an ideal world where gender inequality no longer exists. Her poetry is both modern
and traditional, always read by the young Iranian people. Although, Forough Farrokhzad died very
soon at the age of 32 in a car accident, but in contemporary Persian poetry, she still keeps her place
and dignity in contemporary Persian poetry.
