in large parts almost untouched by the processes seen as characterizing modern European history – secularization, institutionalization, rationalization etc. –, exhibiting in fact an undiminished concern with households, religion, living one’s life in personal relationships. Bora is presented as an exemplary character for discussing all those topics, thus implying an ethical and religious discourse across factual and fictional genres. She is made a part of openly gendered versions of “state”, “nation”, “church”, or religion, society and history, where religion may have different statuses and a range of different functions. For future scholarship, it is an important task to bring these seemingly disparate constructions together and to integrate them into a new perspective on European history that includes gender and religion as main categories.
