La Narrativa de Henry Fielding y la Sociedad Inglesa del Siglo XVIII
censure a Leonora y sus decisiones y razonamientos. Para ello inserta en sus
intervenciones varios términos legales. Por ejemplo, cuando escribe a Horatio:
“The refinement of your mind has been so evidently proved by every word
and action ever since I had first the pleasure of knowing you, that I thought it
impossible my good opinion of Horatio could have been heightened by any
additional proof of merit. ... And to your merit, Hereto, I am obliged, that prevents
my being in that most uneasy of all the situations I can figure in my imagination, of
being led by inclination to love the person whom my judgement forces me to
condemn.” (II, 4)
Irónicamente, claro está, Leonora se siente inclinada a amar a quien no
lo merece, pero su vanidad le impide enjuiciar la situación correctamente. Una
vez que elige a Bellarmine, le preocupan las posibles recriminaciones y la
opinión negativa del entorno por haber abandonado a Horatio. Después,
cuando Bellarmine está herido, se decide a visitarle y Fielding expresa su
decisión diciendo que esa misma tarde Leonora “executed her resolution”. La tía
de Leonora, que le anima a dejarse cortejar por Bellarmine, también emplea
términos legales en su discurso:
“The world is always on the side of prudence ... and will surely condemn
you if you sacrified your interest to any motive whatever.” (II, 4).
Al final de la historia, sin embargo, el narrador, aportando otro punto de
vista que ayuda a moderar un juicio demasiado severo por parte del lector,
advierte, también haciendo uso del lenguaje legal, que Leonora.
“deserves perhaps pity for her misfortunes more than our censure, for a
behaviour to which the artifices of her aunt probably contributed and to which very
young women are often rendered too liable, by that blameable levity in the education
of our sex.”
Slipslop es seguramente uno de los personajes más divertidos y
simpáticos de la novela así como uno de los que emanan más energía. La
descripción de su figura desproporcionada recuerda a ciertos personajes de
Hogarth. Su manera tan cómica de hablar, llena de errores, nos acerca al placer
que debía proporcionarle a Fielding la elaboración de discursos tan increíbles.
Aunque la intención de Fielding no era que el lector sintiese admiración hacia
este tipo de personajes, nuestra impresión, o nuestro juicio, de Slipslop es
favorable. Alter reflexionaba sobre este aspecto de la siguiente manera:
“Now when double irony is focused upon a character, it satirically exposes
its target while sustaining an imagination of what it is like to be that person, with
