<strong>La</strong> <strong>Narrativa</strong> <strong>de</strong> <strong>Henry</strong> <strong>Fielding</strong> y <strong>la</strong> <strong>Sociedad</strong> <strong>Inglesa</strong> <strong>de</strong>l <strong>Siglo</strong> <strong>XVIII</strong><br />

propone ir a buscar una licencia <strong>de</strong> matrimonio para contraer matrimonio lo<br />

antes posible, Parson Adams le disua<strong>de</strong> ya que quiere que se observen <strong>la</strong>s<br />

normas <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> Iglesia y no sólo <strong>la</strong>s civiles. Adams sin duda estaba al corriente <strong>de</strong><br />

los abusos <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> ley civil que permitía <strong>la</strong> celebración <strong>de</strong> matrimonios<br />

fraudulentos lo mismo que otros que, aunque no eran ilegales, estaban basados<br />

en <strong>la</strong> codicia, <strong>la</strong> lujuria o en otros motivos que él consi<strong>de</strong>raba indignos. Como<br />

un hombre <strong>de</strong> Iglesia que era se oponía a un proceso en el que el papel <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> <strong>de</strong><br />

<strong>la</strong> Iglesia se veía disminuido a <strong>la</strong> hora <strong>de</strong> fomentar el i<strong>de</strong>al <strong>de</strong>l matrimonio<br />

como una re<strong>la</strong>ción tanto espiritual como física. Previene a Joseph para que no<br />

se apresure, porque esas prisas parecen indicar que se <strong>de</strong>ja llevar por los<br />

p<strong>la</strong>ceres carnales, y esto le da <strong>la</strong> oportunidad <strong>de</strong> hacer el ya mencionado<br />

sermón acerca <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong>s pasiones incontro<strong>la</strong>das:<br />

“All passions are criminal in excess, even love itself.”<br />

Sin embargo, <strong>de</strong>spués <strong>de</strong> su <strong>la</strong>rgo y complicado viaje, les dice que<br />

cuando regresen, él mismo les unirá en matrimonio, pero no sin <strong>la</strong><br />

correspondiente ceremonia:<br />

“ … he [Adams] would by o means consent to anything contrary to the<br />

Forms of the Church, that he had no Licence, nor in<strong>de</strong>ed would he advise him<br />

[Joseph] to obtain one. That the Church proscribed a form, namely the publication<br />

of Banns, with which all good Christians ought to comply, and to the Omission of<br />

which befell great Folks in Marriage … As many as are joined together other wise<br />

than G ---‘s Word doth allow, are not joined together by G ---, neither is the<br />

Matrimony <strong>La</strong>wful.” (II, 13)<br />

Esta prescripción para el matrimonio es muy importante puesto que<br />

expresa <strong>la</strong> opinión <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> Iglesia, que quería un reconocimiento público y<br />

espiritual <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> ceremonia <strong>de</strong>l matrimonio.<br />

Para enfatizar <strong>la</strong> importancia <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> ceremonia pública, <strong>la</strong> insistencia <strong>de</strong>l<br />

párroco en <strong>la</strong>s amonestaciones también nos prepara un acontecimiento<br />

posterior en <strong>la</strong> trama. <strong>La</strong>dy Booby, que todavía se siente enamorada <strong>de</strong> Joseph,<br />

oye en <strong>la</strong> iglesia <strong>la</strong>s amonestaciones <strong>de</strong> Joseph y Fanny:<br />

“When the Prayers were en<strong>de</strong>d Mr. Adams stood up, and with a loud<br />

Voice pronounced: I publish the Banns of Marriage between Joseph<br />

Andrews and Frances Goodwill, both of this parish, &c. Whether<br />

this had any effect on <strong>La</strong>dy Booby or no, … I could never discover: but Certain it<br />

is, that in about a quarter of an Hour she stood up, and directed her Eyes to that<br />

part of the Church where the Women sat, and persisted in looking … with so<br />
