(i) Newcomers with certificates can be removed only when chargeable.<br />

(ii) Those receiving relief to wear badges.<br />

1714 For Reducing the <strong>La</strong>ws re<strong>la</strong>ting to Rogues ... and Vagrants into one Act...<br />

(13 Anne c. 26)<br />

(i) Constables may remove idle and disor<strong>de</strong>rly beggars, and whip them<br />

if recalcitrant. JPs to examine other vagabonds and sessions <strong>de</strong>al with<br />

dangerous and incorrigible rogues: each may or<strong>de</strong>r a whipping or<br />

hard <strong>la</strong>bour in houses of correction. Rewards for those<br />

apprehending them.<br />

(ii) Certain categories of vagrant may be bound to service for seven<br />

years, at home or overseas.<br />

(iii) County rates to be levied for the expense of passing vagrants.<br />

(9 Geo. I c. 7)<br />

(i) No additions to relief lists unless evi<strong>de</strong>nce taken on oath by a JP.<br />

(ii) Churchwar<strong>de</strong>ns and overseers may, with consent of parishioners, hire a<br />

house or houses and contract with anyone for the maintenance and setting<br />

to work of the poor there.<br />

(iii) Poor refusing to be housed there to be <strong>de</strong>nied relief.<br />

(iv) Two or more parishes may unite, with consent of a JP, for these purposes.<br />

1740 For amending and enforcing the <strong>La</strong>ws re<strong>la</strong>ting to Rogues Vagabonds and<br />

other idle and disor<strong>de</strong>rly Persons...<br />

(13 Geo. 11 c. 24)<br />

(i) 'Idle and disor<strong>de</strong>rly', now further <strong>de</strong>fined, may be sent to house of<br />

correction for a month's hard <strong>la</strong>bour by a JP.<br />

(ii) JPs to examine vagabonds and pass them home via houses of<br />

correction, or send to house of correction until sessions.<br />

(iii) Sessions to sentence incorrigible rogues to up to six months hard <strong>la</strong>bour in<br />

houses of correction where they can be whipped.<br />
