1714 For Reducing the Laws relating to Rogues ... and Vagrants into one Act...
(13 Anne c. 26)
(i) Constables may remove idle and disorderly beggars, and whip them
if recalcitrant. JPs to examine other vagabonds and sessions deal with
dangerous and incorrigible rogues: each may order a whipping or
hard labour in houses of correction. Rewards for those
apprehending them.
(ii) Certain categories of vagrant may be bound to service for seven
years, at home or overseas.
(iii) County rates to be levied for the expense of passing vagrants.
* 1723 For Amending the Laws relating to the Settlement Employment and
Relief of the Poor [Workhouse Test Act]
(9 Geo. I c. 7)
(i) No additions to relief lists unless evidence taken on oath by a JP.
(ii) Churchwardens and overseers may, with consent of parishioners, hire a
house or houses and contract with anyone for the maintenance and setting
to work of the poor there.
(iii) Poor refusing to be housed there to be denied relief.
(iv) Two or more parishes may unite, with consent of a JP, for these purposes.
1740 For amending and enforcing the Laws relating to Rogues Vagabonds and
other idle and disorderly Persons...
(13 Geo. 11 c. 24)
(i) 'Idle and disorderly', now further defined, may be sent to house of
correction for a month's hard labour by a JP.
(ii) JPs to examine vagabonds and pass them home via houses of
correction, or send to house of correction until sessions.
(iii) Sessions to sentence incorrigible rogues to up to six months hard labour in
houses of correction where they can be whipped.
