The very last marriages performed at the Fleet before such 'clandestine' ceremonies were declared illegal
on 25 March 1754. This book was once the property of infamous marriage-monger, Walter Wyatt. The
numbered entries tie in with the index at the back of the volume. On 24 March there were fourteen weddings here
and 830 in all since 25 June 1753. Here you can see two grooms who travelled from Derbyshire and Sussex; the
occupations range from a husbandman, tailor, silversmith, bricklayer and hatter, to a ginger bread beaker [sic]
and staymaker. (PRO ref. RG 7/271).
Almost all the surviving Fleet registers and supplementary notebooks are in PRO class
RG 7. At least 250,000 marriages are recorded between 1690 and 1754, when they were
outlawed. Few have been published. The registers, though indexed, were haphazardly kept and
include forgeries, false names, copying mistakes from other registers, duplicate entries and
altered dates.
