“denying what was so plainly proved against him, even by his own wife” (II, 6)
En este punto, el narrador hace una interrupción para destacar el error
judicial de Allworthy al aceptar la declaración de su esposa en contra del marido,
aunque le disculpa inmediatamente. Allworthy accede a retrasar el juicio hasta
que se pueda contar con el testimonio de Jenny, pero como no es posible
encontrarla, declara a Partridge culpable. El narrador vuelve a disculpar a
Allworthy:
“Whether he was guilty or not, will appear hereafter ... whatever was the
truth of the case, there was evidence more than sufficient to convict him before
Allworthy; indeed much less would have satisfied a bench of justices on an order of
bastardy” (II, 6).
Sin embargo, el narrador continúa dándonos pistas acerca de la verdadera
situación. Dice que los Partridge también tenían empleado a un muchacho con
quien Jenny:
“there had subsisted sufficient intimacy to found a reasonable suspicion;
and yet, so blind is jealousy, this circumstance never once entered into the head of
the enraged wife” (II, 6).
Allworthy tampoco indaga más. La petición de perdón para Partridge por
parte de Bridget no tuvo éxito, ya que Allworthy:
“did not think, with some late writers, that mercy consists only in
punishing offenders; yet he has as far from thinking that he is proper to his
excellent quality to pardon great criminals wantonly, without any reason whatever.
Any doubtfulness of the fact, or any circumstance of mitigation, was never
disregarded; but the petitions of an offender or the intercessions of others did not in
the least affect him. In a word, he never pardoned, because the offender himself, or
his friends, were unwilling that he should be punished.” (II, 6)
El narrador establece una alternancia entre los evidentes errores de juicio
de Allworthy y su comparativamente razonable sentido de la justicia. Los juicios
erróneos de Allworthy son, por otra parte, necesarios para el desarrollo del
argumento. Esta alternancia, sin embargo, es la que hace que no esté tan claro
que Allworthy sea el centro ético de la novela. El narrador muestra los errores
de Allworthy y después afirma que sus motivos eran justos y piadosos. Sin
embargo, en el sermón que da a Jenny Jones acerca de la castidad se aprecia un
tono severo y si cabe un tanto pomposo, que hace que el sermón no parezca
