La Narrativa de Henry Fielding y la Sociedad Inglesa del Siglo XVIII
“If comedy cannot deal obsessively with “development” or with the socalled
“inner life” ... without ceasing to be comedy, and myth or romance cannot descend
to psychologizing without ceasing to be mythical, yet as literary forms they can
quite obviously provide an illumination of human experience and human character
that is as “serious” and profound as that of any literary form known to the world
of art.” 20
La importancia y el valor de Sophia en la novela no descansan en su situación
de mujer joven atrapada en una situación delicada y su capacidad para
afrontarla. Si sólo se tratara de esto, entraría en el reino de la tragedia. Como
personaje de una novela cómica, su vida interior es limitada. Pero esto no quiere
decir que se trate de un personaje irreflexivo. Por el contrario, Fielding se
cuida de hacer ver cuáles son sus sentimientos y sus motivaciones en cada ocasión,
y como se mueve impulsada por ellos. El hecho de que Fielding no haga
explícitas sus emociones no quiere decir que carezca de ellas. Sus acciones y
sus decisiones muestran claramente su calidad moral y como ser humano. Estoy
en general de acuerdo con Smallwood quien argumenta que Fielding se
involucra en:
“the expansion and revaluation of a traits of the conventional female
character” 21
Esto le sirve para hacer de sus dos últimas heroínas personajes más
atractivos y con más peso. De su novela más famosa Smallwood dice lo siguiente:
“In Tom Jones ... Fielding makes excellence of understanding, an independent
moral sense, and spiritual integrity entirely compatible with his ideal of the
female character. But this is a somewhat unconventional move, entirely in sympathy
with the aspirations of the rational –feminist followers of Mary Astell. As such, it
conflicts profoundly with the conventions of a society in which women were required
to defer automatically to the authority of men, to fathers and then to husbands.” 22
Smallwood piensa que esta “expansión y reevaluación” de los personajes
femeninos sitúa a Fielding, como ya he mencionado, en consonancia con las
feministas-racionales, quienes argumentaban en sus escritos de una manera
equilibrada y persuasiva que las mujeres poseían las mismas capacidades intelectuales
y morales que los hombres, y por lo tanto merecían ser tratadas como
iguales.
