this Matter in my Head some Time ago: for certainly the two Estates are in a
Manner joined in Matrimony already, and it would be a thousand Pities to part
them.” (VI, 2)
La mayor parte del discurso del caballero está libre del uso del dialecto
que usa habitualmente. Todo lo que tiene que ver con sus propiedades y sus
intereses lo expresa en un inglés claro y preciso. Para él, el matrimonio entre
esposa y esposo es también el matrimonio entre la tierra y la propiedad, como
lo había sido durante años y como lo había sido el suyo propio, por lo que
inicia las negociaciones con el mismo fervor con el que se dedica a la caza del
zorro. Sin consultar para nada a Sophia, propone el matrimonio a Allworthy.
Éste, sin embargo, le contesta que:
“if the young people liked each other, he should be very desirous to
complete the Affair” (VI, 3).
El punto de vista de Allworthy acerca del matrimonio difiere
drásticamente del que tiene Western. Y ambos contrastan con el que exhibe
Blifil. Allworthy cree que el verdadero amor es la base del matrimonio.
Cuando comunica a Blifil la propuesta de compromiso, el carácter codicioso
de Blifil se revela ante el lector:
“The Charms of Sophia had not made the least Impression on Blifil; not
that his Heart was pre-engaged; neither was he totally insensible of Beauty, or ha
any Aversion to Women; … yet he was altogether as well furnished with some
other Passions, that promised themselves very full Gratification in the young Lady’s
Fortune. Such were Avarice and Ambition, … He had more than once considered
the Possession of this Fortune as a very desirable Thing, and had entertained some
distant Views concerning it: But his own youth, and that of the young Lady, and
indeed principally a Reflection that Mr. Western might marry again, and have
more Children, had restrained him from too hasty or eager Pursuit.” (VI, 4)
En realidad, Blifil había considerado esta posibilidad previamente, sin
embargo, miente a Allworthy y le dice a que:
“Matrimony was a subject on which he had not yet thought. … .” (VI, 4).
Allworthy expresa su sorpresa ante la fría respuesta de Blifil, y éste se da
cuenta de que tiene que ser cauto para que el proyecto no se le escape de las
manos. Por eso, recordando las enseñanzas de Thwackum y Square, y
haciendo uso de “a discourse so wisely and religiously on Love and Marriage” convence
a Allworthy de que después de un cierto tiempo se enamorará. Pero la realidad
es muy otra y, en realidad, Blifil, como sus padres, sólo busca en el matrimonio
