circunstancias, pero que le hace entrar en el juego del adulterio con las
implicaciones reales y potenciales posteriores.
En diferentes números de The Covent-Garden Journal, en los meses
posteriores a la publicación de Amelia, Fielding manifestó su reprobación de la
prostitución, sobre todo por como ésta afectaba a la institución matrimonial.
Por ejemplo en el nº 57 (1 de Agosto de 1752), hace una exposición de los
peligros que entrañan las relaciones con prostitutas, y después explicando las
consecuencias de tal comportamiento:
“And such Prostitutes are the lowest and meanest, so are they the basest,
vilest, and wickedest of all Creatures. …
This is a Crime little short of Murder, it bears a near resemblance to
Poisoning, which is the worst of all Murder. … The Contagion extends not only to
an innocent Wife but like the divine Vengeance, to the Children of the third and
fourth Generation.
I shall not dwell on this Odious Subject, nor shall I fall into a Common
Place, by expatiating on all the ruinous and dreadful Consequences, which are
almost certain to attend a Commerce with these Women. Such are to the Men of
Business in particular, (besides the Danger already mentioned) the Loss of
reputation and of Credit, Neglect of their Families and Occupations, and
Consumption of both their Time and their Money; all which visibly tend to and
frequently end in Bankruptcy and Ruin, and sometimes, by an endeavour to avoid
these Consequences, in all Kinds of Fraud, Violence, and Rapine.
Thus then I think the Trade of a Prostitute, can scarce be called either a
reputable or an innocent Calling, with respect to the prostitute herself, and with
Regard to the Public, it seems, in great Property of Speech, to deserve the Name of
an Evil.”
El intento de Fielding de señalar la prostitución como un gran mal
social, nos devuelve de nuevo a la dedicatoria de Amelia:
“... to expose some of the most glaring Evils.”
A pesar de esto, las opiniones de Fielding con respecto de las prostitutas
eran contradictorias. Si se analizan algunos de los casos de los que se informa
en The Covent-Garden Journal, es evidente su compasión hacia las chicas que
caen en al prostitución debido a las circunstancias difíciles de su vida. Siempre
intentaba mantener a estas chicas, que ejercían fuera de Bridewell, donde temía
que terminarían empeorando por la mala influencia de otras prostitutas más
