“… had somewhat about him, which though I think writers are not
thoroughly agreed in is Name, doth certainly inhabit some human Breasts; whose
Use is not so properly to distinguish Right from Wrong, as to prompt and incite
them to the former, and to restrain and with-hold from the latter.” (IV, 6).
Debido a la existencia de esta conciencia en Tom, de la que Fielding
comenta irónicamente: “whether he derived from Twackum or Square I will not
determine”, a Tom ni siquiera se le pasa por la cabeza la idea de casarse con
Sophia por su fortuna:
“It was this that taught him, that to repay the Civilities and little
Friendships of Hospitality by robbing the House where you have received them, is
to be the basest and meanest of Thieves … it seemed to him difficult to assign a
Punishment adequate to the robbing of a Man of his whole Fortune, and of his
Child in the Bargain.
This Principle therefore prevented him from any thought of making his
Fortune by such means. … Had he been greatly enamoured of Sophia, he possibly
might have thought otherwise; but give me Leave to say, there is great Difference
between running away with a Man’s Daughter from the Motive of Love, an doing
the same Thing from the motive of Theft.” (IV, 6)
A Western no le sorprendió que Tom pudiese ser el padre del hijo de
Molly cuando el párroco Suple le cuenta los rumores que corren al respecto:
“I smoke it: I smoke it. Tom is certainly the Father of this Bastard.
Zooks, Parson, you remember he recommended the Veather o’her to me---d---n un,
what the sly B---ch ‘tis. Ay, ay, as sure as Twopence, Tom is the Veather of the
Bastard.” (IV,10)
Este hecho no disminuye su aprecio hacia Tom. Sólo le preocupa a
Sophia, quien, en el curso de la conversación, se da cuenta del amor que siente,
y al mismo tiempo comprende lo terrible de la situación y del abismo que
existe entre ellos. Nunca podrá casarse con él y permanecer en una posición
social y familiar elevada. No obstante, las objeciones del Squire para el
matrimonio entre Tom y su hija son fundamentalmente económicas, más que
por su nacimiento.
Cuando Sophia confía a su tía que está enamorada de Tom, Mrs.
Western, la increpa por deshonrar a la familia deseando unirse a un hijo
ilegítimo (VI, 5). Sin embargo, también da amplias muestras de que el mayor
inconveniente que ve en él es la falta de fortuna. Apoya la candidatura de Blifil
hasta que aparece la propuesta de Lord Fellamar, una opción que ella
considera más ventajosa ya que procede de un miembro de la nobleza. Trata
