“… had somewhat about him, which though I think writers are not<br />

thoroughly agreed in is Name, doth certainly inhabit some human Breasts; whose<br />

Use is not so properly to distinguish Right from Wrong, as to prompt and incite<br />

them to the former, and to restrain and with-hold from the <strong>la</strong>tter.” (IV, 6).<br />

Debido a <strong>la</strong> existencia <strong>de</strong> esta conciencia en Tom, <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> que <strong>Fielding</strong><br />

comenta irónicamente: “whether he <strong>de</strong>rived from Twackum or Square I will not<br />

<strong>de</strong>termine”, a Tom ni siquiera se le pasa por <strong>la</strong> cabeza <strong>la</strong> i<strong>de</strong>a <strong>de</strong> casarse con<br />

Sophia por su fortuna:<br />

“It was this that taught him, that to repay the Civilities and little<br />

Friendships of Hospitality by robbing the House where you have received them, is<br />

to be the basest and meanest of Thieves … it seemed to him difficult to assign a<br />

Punishment a<strong>de</strong>quate to the robbing of a Man of his whole Fortune, and of his<br />

Child in the Bargain.<br />

This Principle therefore prevented him from any thought of making his<br />

Fortune by such means. … Had he been greatly enamoured of Sophia, he possibly<br />

might have thought otherwise; but give me Leave to say, there is great Difference<br />

between running away with a Man’s Daughter from the Motive of Love, an doing<br />

the same Thing from the motive of Theft.” (IV, 6)<br />

A Western no le sorprendió que Tom pudiese ser el padre <strong>de</strong>l hijo <strong>de</strong><br />

Molly cuando el párroco Suple le cuenta los rumores que corren al respecto:<br />

“I smoke it: I smoke it. Tom is certainly the Father of this Bastard.<br />

Zooks, Parson, you remember he recommen<strong>de</strong>d the Veather o’her to me---d---n un,<br />

what the sly B---ch ‘tis. Ay, ay, as sure as Twopence, Tom is the Veather of the<br />

Bastard.” (IV,10)<br />

Este hecho no disminuye su aprecio hacia Tom. Sólo le preocupa a<br />

Sophia, quien, en el curso <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> conversación, se da cuenta <strong>de</strong>l amor que siente,<br />

y al mismo tiempo compren<strong>de</strong> lo terrible <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> situación y <strong>de</strong>l abismo que<br />

existe entre ellos. Nunca podrá casarse con él y permanecer en una posición<br />

social y familiar elevada. No obstante, <strong>la</strong>s objeciones <strong>de</strong>l Squire para el<br />

matrimonio entre Tom y su hija son fundamentalmente económicas, más que<br />

por su nacimiento.<br />

Cuando Sophia confía a su tía que está enamorada <strong>de</strong> Tom, Mrs.<br />

Western, <strong>la</strong> increpa por <strong>de</strong>shonrar a <strong>la</strong> familia <strong>de</strong>seando unirse a un hijo<br />

ilegítimo (VI, 5). Sin embargo, también da amplias muestras <strong>de</strong> que el mayor<br />

inconveniente que ve en él es <strong>la</strong> falta <strong>de</strong> fortuna. Apoya <strong>la</strong> candidatura <strong>de</strong> Blifil<br />

hasta que aparece <strong>la</strong> propuesta <strong>de</strong> Lord Fel<strong>la</strong>mar, una opción que el<strong>la</strong><br />

consi<strong>de</strong>ra más ventajosa ya que proce<strong>de</strong> <strong>de</strong> un miembro <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> nobleza. Trata<br />
