BOARD OF THE GREEN CLOATH: División del gabinete real a las órdenes del Lord
Steward (administrador), el Board of the Green Cloath (llamado así por el color de
cobertor de la mesa a la que los oficiales se sentaban), podía funcionar como
tribunal de justicia para mantener el orden dentro de los límites de la corte.
BONA WAVIATA: Bienes que han sido robados y posteriormente abandonados en
la huída. “Waifs (Bona Waviata) are goods which are stolen and waived upon Pursuit
(for Fear of being Apprehended) by the Thief in his Flight, and upon that account forfeited to
the Lord of the Manor. The Reason of this forfeiture is a Punishment of the Owner of the
Goods, for not Pursuing and Bringing the Thief to be Attained. If the Thief had not the
Goods in Possession upon Pursuit, there is no Forfeiture; and then the Owner may seize them
where He finds them, without any fresh Pursuit” THOMAS WOOD, Institute of the Laws of
England, 1734, II, 2, p. 213 1 .
BOND AND JUDGEMENT: Escrito mediante el que una persona (obligor) se
compromete a pagar una cierta suma de dinero a otro (obligee) poniendo sus
bienes como garantía.
BOW STREET RUNNERS: Agentes contratados por Henry y John Fielding a partir
de 1750 y cuya base de operaciones era la oficina de Fielding en Bow Street, en
Covent Garden. Su trabajo era similar al de los cuerpos de policía actuales.
BRIDEWELL: Originalmente, Bridewell Hospital, en Blackfriars, convertido tras la
Reforma en correccional para prostitutas, vagabundos etc. Después el término
se usaba para referirse a cualquier tipo de cárcel.
CAGE: Prisión
CANT: Jerga secreta empelada por algunos delincuentes.
CAPIAS IN WITHERNAM: “In an action of replacing, the reprisal of other goods in lieu of those
taken by at first distress and eloigned; also the writ commanding the sheriff to take the
reprisal” (O.E.D.)
CAPITAL PUNISHMENT: Pena máxima. Pena de muerte. Se denominaba Capital
Crimes a los delitos castigados con la pena de muerte.
CERTIORARI: Orden emitida por un alto tribunal para que la documentación de un
caso se transfiera a un tribunal de rango inferior.
