Using storylines in performance related learning and teaching
The storyline approach is a structured approach to meaningful, authentic and challenging learning.
The method is extremely pupil-centred and actively involves the learners in the learning process.
Storyline uses as its basis the pupils' prior knowledge and skills. It can be used as revision and as an
on-going project for a longer period of time. It has the advantage of supporting less able pupils and
allowing more able pupils to work at a higher level. The central issue of this course is to discuss an
innovative approach to language learning which can be quite useful for English classes with pupils
who have difficulties in learning. Practical examples will be demonstrated, practised and discussed.
The participants will be encouraged to work out basic ideas for a storyline which they can use in their
English classes with pupils who have special needs.

American Studies
Teaching languages is always closely connected with cultural studies. The aim of this course is to
discover strands of American culture and thus to provide the teachers with intercultural issues and
information about history, art, mass media, consumerism, music, geography, landscape, ethnicity,
religion and traditions of the United States. The workshops will provide practice in American language,
cultural studies and teaching through a broad variety of activities such as lectures, interactive
discussions and media. This course will be held in co-operation with the Center for US-Studies of the
Martin-Luther University Halle-Wittenberg. In addition to the presenters from the Center for US-Studies
of the Martin-Luther-University the course will include outside speakers (US Consulate, Fulbright
professors)

Primary English for five years in Saxony-Anhalt - Facing new challenges along the way
English classes have been mandatory at primary level in Saxony- Anhalt for five years. The
participants will discuss results and new challenges. Workshops will focus on English for very young
learners, performance related learning and teaching of a foreign language as well as on monitoring
and supporting the learning process effectively.
