problems are long-term education and political acculturation. However,
in the near future we will probably have to live with these problems.
Zwahlen Pedro: According to what you say the main tool in countering
these threats would be educational measures.
Loğoğlu Faruk: Countering these threats requires a very comprehensive
and sustained effort at education. Therefore, I not only think of educational
efforts in the classroom – though it is there that efforts have to
start, and from a very early age – but also of educational activities at the
working place and in all public spaces. In this respect, the print and visual
media also have an important role to play.
Thalmann Anton: Thank you for your explanations, which are moderate,
very constructive, and globally in line with the way we see things here.
What would Turkey’s role as a future member of the EU be – in either
mitigating or exacerbating the effects of religious extremism? Turkey is a
natural bridge; however, some Europeans think that that bridge would
bring danger if Turkey were to join the Union, while others hope for a
moderation of the influence of religious extremists such as Islamists in
such a case.
You said that territorial defence was still at the core of security policy.
I basically agree with you but would like you to elaborate on that in a
more differentiated way. How do you judge that question from the point
of view of someone with the kind of neighbourhood Turkey has – which
is a rough neighbourhood compared to the kind of situation Switzerland
is in, comfortably set in the middle of Europe, surrounded by members of
NATO, so that nobody can attack Switzerland without attacking NATO.
Turkey has a very large army, but it also has, as you said yourself, a very
rough neighbourhood. What advice would you give to Switzerland: Do
you think we could do with a smaller army and compensate for that by
offering a little more cooperation?
