Predictors for treatment response in patients with acute
schizophrenia

Introduction: To explore predictors and explanatory variables for
treatment response and dosing of antipsychotic medication in patients
with schizophrenia suffering from an acute episode.
Method: Six-week prospective international, open-label flexible
dose study (PALSCH3018) with oral paliperidone ER in acutely
exacerbated schizophrenia patients. For analysis stepwise logistic
regression was used, taking into account country, age, sex, BMI,
diagnosis, duration of schizophrenia, prior hospitalizations, psychotic
symptoms (Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS)),
disease severity (Clinical Global Impression-Severity Scale
(CGI-S)), and patient functioning at baseline.
Discussion / Results: 294 patients were analyzed (53 % male, mean
age 40.3 ± 12.4 years). 80 % of patients completed the study. The
mean dose of paliperidone ER was 7.5 ± 2.1 mg / day. Total PANSS
score improved from 100.2 ± 17.2 (baseline) to 72.7 ± 20.3 (endpoint)
