Topic 3 G Psychotische Störungen, F2 // Psychotic disorders, F2
the clarification of the nature and the functional origins of the phenomenon.
AIM: Test the hypothesis that PS in schizophrenic patients
is correlated to the degree of fluency deficits in motor sequencing
in patients with schizophrenia. These motor impairments were
then contrasted to the patients‘ capacity to allocate endogenous attention
for the creation of a vivid representation of motor goals.
Method: The Symbol Digit Substitution Test (SDST) was used as an
indicator of PS. Motor fluency was measured in a sequential tapping
task using a tactile screen (ELoTouch). Here, the subjects‘ task
was to tap a series of 6 visual targets (placed around a circle) in
rhythm with an alternating (350 / 650ms) rhythmic pattern. Following
Gestalt rules, grey lines were used to group the visual targets
two by two, except for the neutral condition for which no lines were
presented. Visual grouping could be congruent or not to the auditory
grouping.
Discussion / Results: PS and motor fluency (tap duration) were
correlated in both groups. Performance level in the tapping task
was similar in controls and patients in the neutral condition only.
Controls revealed an increase in performance on congruent trials
and a decrease on non-congruent trials. Patients revealed similar
levels of performance throughout. Conclusion: Results suggest that
schizophrenia is not associated to a simple deficit in processing
speed or in producing single independent actions as in neutral conditions,
performance levels were normalised. Nevertheless, results
suggest a planning deficit for actions that require vivid motor representations
for fluent control. This may be associated to a dysfunctional
mechanism for the endogenous allocation of attention for
motor planning.
Action monitoring in depression
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is characterized by disturbances
of mood and affect, but also by a distinct pattern of psychomotor
and cognitive deficits such as motor retardation and impaired executive
functioning. An important aspect of executive functioning is
action or performance monitoring, i. e. a cognitive control process
that involves the continuous evaluation and adjustment of ongoing
actions. A well-known marker for action monitoring is the errornegativity
(Ne) or error-related negativity (ERN), an event-related
potential component generated in the anterior cingulate cortex
following erroneous responses. We conducted two experimental
studies in which the integrity of the action monitoring process was
investigated in MDD. The Ne / ERN was measured in a large sample
of severely depressed patients using a speeded two-choice reaction
task and compared with a sample of healthy controls. In the first
study, the Ne / ERN was measured during the early stages of a depressive
episode. In addition, it was investigated whether there is a
relationship between this action monitoring and the psychomotor
performance (measured by means of a computerized copying-task
method) in MDD. In the second study, the impact of depressive
symptom reduction on the Ne / ERN was explored, by measuring
the Ne / ERN during the early stages of a depressive episode and
again after 7 weeks of treatment. The findings of both studies will
be presented, discussed and compared with other studies in this
research domain. References: D. Schrijvers, ERA.
Hierzu gehören u. a. Pfadanalysen mittels Strukturgleichungsmodellen,
Grundlagen schizophrener Psychosen.
