state the volume and/or page number, and the frequency of each lexeme and
wordform occurrences. They present the wordlists in the alphabetic order. Let
us present the vocabulary entry of word index from (Бурячок, 1974):
білий (9): білий 38.28; білого 64.27; біла 31.15; біле 30.5, 30.9, 30.19,
35.34, 36.29; білії — з мн. 26.12.
There are some differences between word indices nevertheless. Word indices
can be classified from the point of view of such characteristics as follows:
1) source: they can be built on the basis of one concrete writer’s work
(Ващенко, 1955), on the basis of selected works (Ващенко – Петрова,
1961; Бурячок, 1974; Бойко, 1961; Сизько, 1970; Ковалик – Ощипко,
1972; Ковалик, 1990) or on the basis of all works (Лук’янюк, 2004);
2) item description: occurrence identification can be given for every wordform
(Ващенко, 1955; Бурячок, 1974) or only for dictionary (initial)
form (Бойко, 1961);
3) criteria of items selection: foreign words and words in foreign script can
be arranged as a separate list (Ващенко – Петрова, 1961; Бурячок, 1974),
all words can be arranged as one list (Бойко, 1961);
4) occurrence identification: this characteristic can be given for every word
and wordform (Ващенко, 1955; Бурячок, 1974) or only for its first occurrence
(Ващенко – Петрова, 1961).
3.3. Сoncordance is a type of dictionary which gives all or selected contexts
to each its word-list lexeme. The completed text is always in the source of
concordance. Since the word meaning can be determined only in the context
concordance is the single resource for explanatory dictionary compilation, in
particular vocabulary of writer’s language. There are concordance for the works
of two Ukrainian authors: T. Shevchenko’s poetry (Ільницький – Гавриш, 2001)
and I. Franko’s novel “Cross Paths” (“Перехресні стежки”) (Бук – Ровенчак,
2006a) now. Contrary to the lexicographic works mentioned above they were
composed using computer programs.
The word context in concordance can be given in two formats. Format KWIC
(Key Word In Context) proposes the same number of words in left and right side
from item lexeme (Sinclair, 1991, p. 173). Format KWAL (Key Word and Line)
proposes the item lexeme in sentence (McEnery – Wilson, 2001, p. 29). The
Concordance of Shevchenko’s works is in KWIC, the Concordance of Franko’s
novel is in both, it is available in Internet. A user can choose the suitable
