STANFORD J. SHAW
in a tremendous movement which repaired all this damage and
created a vibrant, modern and prosperous state which has developed
continuously for almost a century since that time. The world knows
all the reforms that Atatürk introduced in Turkey to achieve this end,
and there is no point of repeating them here.
It is not enough, however, simply to commemorate, honor and
remember Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and the services he accomplished,
not only for Turkey but also for the world. We must also honor and
respect and remember and accept and follow the many principles
he used to achieve these ends. The specifıc measures he introduced
naturally have changed in the course of time and as the problems
which required them have changed, but the principles that he followed
remain eternal guides for what should be done to meet the changing
conditions and problems that have developed since his time.
Of course many of the maxims that he left to the Turkish people
in both spoken and written words, are remembered and most of these
were followed while he was President of Turkey and in the years
since his death. The most important of these is the noble phrase
‘peace at home, peace in the world.’ If only other nations would
follow Turkey in accepting these words the entire world would be
much better off today.
But he also left many principles and examples, not in what he
said but in what he did, the actions he took in response to the many
problems he faced, first in winning the Turkish War of National
Liberation, and secondly reviving the Turkish nation as he built the
Turkish Republic.
In honoring him this afternoon I propose to present some of these
principles or maxims to you along with the conclusions that one can
well derive from them as examples that should be followed by the
Turkish people with the same reverence and the same dedication as
they have accepted what he did.
I have derived these examples out of two studies that I have made
during the last decade, a study of the Turkish War for Independence,
which I feel should be called the Turkish War of National Liberation,
which was published under the title ‘From Empire to Republic’ by
the Türk Tarih Kurumu in 2000, and a study on which I am now
working regarding the Ottoman Empire during the First World War,
