(The Great Man who succeeded inthe exceptionnal task of renewing a People"). ("The Great Man who succeededin the exceptionnal task of renewing a people".) A dedication thatcould be adressed to himself!Charles de Gaulle was deeply conscious of the close links existingbetvveen France and Turkey. For him, as for ali historians, the nineteenthcentury in the Ottoman Empire, was the "French Century". In everyfield, trade, industry, culture, armed forces or social behaviour of the "effendis",the French model was present.In the course of History, for the French, everything that came fromthe East was Turkish: bath, meals, coffıee, dresses, a la turque". And forthe Turks, everything that came from europe was "French": food, toilets,dresses and, alas!, even venereal diseases!The association was specially important among the generationsof Turks to whom France provided a second culture. Almost everyonein the ruling classes spoke the French language as fluently as theirown.By a striking coincidence, the visit of Charles de Gaulle in Trukeymarked the hundredth anniversary of the foundation of Galatasaray. TheGeneral remembered with pride, that the year 1868, in which the illustriouscollege was founded, marked the begining of what was to be themarch toward modernization. He recalled that Sultan Abdul Azizcreated Galatasaray at the close of a solemn visit to France. The projectwas adopted thanks to the efforts of the grand Vizir Memet pâcha andFuat pacha, with the cooperation of the French minister of Education.Victor Duruy.De Gaulle also recalled that in France the Ecole des Langues Orientales,founded by Colbert, the Minister of Louis the Fourtheenth, gavebirth to generations of French men and women who discovered with lovethe Turkish language and culture. And the School of Administration wasorganized in Turkey, after the Second World War, with the collaborationof the French "Ecole Nationale d'Administration", created by de Gaullehimself.For Charles de Gaulle, the visit was a triumph. He was warmly andgenuinely acclaimmed by the people in ali his appearances. Before leaving<strong>Ankara</strong>, he paid a moving visit to the Mausolee of Atatürk. On the105
