vvas President of Bangladesh Justice Chovvdhury had been invited to visitTurkey and the invitation vvas now renevved. Justice Chovvdhury took meas a member of his Delegation and vvas entertained by the Foreign MinisterÇağlayangil. We vvere received by Prime Minister Süleyman Demireland had an interesting conversation vvith him.In 1992 follovving the collapse of the Soviet Union and the emergenceof Turkic Republics in Central Asia and the Caucasus I accompaniedthe first Bangladesh Delegation to the nevvly Independent states. Itvvas a fascinating experience to vvatch those nevv Republics vvaking upfrom a long period of slumber. Turkey, quite naturally, is daily forgingnevv relations vvith her kith and kin. In 1992 UNESCO declared YunusEmre love year. Emre vvas a poet of the Middle Ages little knovvn outsideTurkey. Unlike his comtemporaries like Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi, vvhovvrote in Persianm, Emre vvrote in pure Anatolian Turkish. I translatedinto Bangla the book of poems of poet Yunus Emre and the book vvaspublished by the Bangla Academy. I thus became the first ever translatorof any Turkish literary vvork into Bangla. In March 1997 PresidentSüleyman Demirel came on an official visit to Bangladesh. On the lavvnsof the Turkish Ambassador's Residence, he delivered a speech, vvhere heeulogised my lifetime vvork in bringing the Bangalee nation and the Turkishnation closer together. He presented me an autographed photographvvith the follovving inscription"ToMr. Arshad-uz ZamanIn appreciation for his valuable contributions in thepromotion of Turkish-Bangladesh relations" 25.3.1997.S. DemirelThe most outstanding aspect of the Turkish Revolution led by MustafaKemal Atatürk, is its durability. Mustafa Kemal burst on the politicalstage of the vvorld in the fırst quarter of the tvventieth century. The collapseof the Ottoman Empire ran parallel vvith the fail of the Czars nextdoor in Russia. The Marxist-Leninist Revolution has been one of the majörevents of our times. This ambitious revolution had as its goal no lessthan creation of a nevv MAN. It spread like vvild fire throughout thevvorld. The battle cry vvas "proletariat of the vvorld ünite. You have nothingto lose but your chains". The Communist party vvorld vvide becamethe vehicle on which rode the Russian revolution. After 70 years theMarxist-Leninist Revolution has come full circle and has been denouncedin its birth place-Russia. Lenin has just about managed to survive but hisrevolution lie in tatters. Other contemporaries of Atatürk like Hitler andMussolini have been throvvn into the dust beans of history. Whether it isZhivko or Cauceascu, their statues lie on the ground dishonoured.738
