In 1932 a flve-year industrial plan was promulgated and an importantprogram of economic and educational reforms vvas launched.The metric system vvas adopted. English replaced French, Arabic orPersian as the principal foreign language to be taught in the schools.On December 6th, 1934, the Great National Assembly changed theconstitution so that ali Turkish men and vvomen vvere henceforth entitledto vote in legislative elections as soon as they had reached the age of 23and to become elected at the age of 31. At the same time it vvas also decidedthat the President of the Republic vvas to be elected from among thedeputies.During 1935 vvomen vvere for the first time elected to the Great NationalAssembly. A member of the World Economic Organizationsince March 26th, 1995.
