BİLMEYEN NE BİLSİN BİZİN?Prof. Geojfrey LEWIS*I expect you ali know where I found the title of this paper. It comesfrom one of Yunus Emre's poems: 'Bilmeyen ne bilsin bizin? Bilenlereselâm olsun' - 'What should the ignorant know of us? To those vvhoknovv, greetings.' (It should be noted that bizin is not a misprint; Yunusadded an n to bizi for the sake of the rhyme.)For us vvho knovv and love Turkey, this is an occasion for rejoicing. But vve are here not in a spirit of blind adulation but as scholars, not onlyto celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Republic, but alsoto examine vvhat the Republic has achieved in its first 75 years. Yet let usnever forget vvhat Mustafa Kemal and ali those Turks vvho had faith inhim and follovved him had achieved before the foundation of the Republic, and vvhat Turkey vvould be novv had there been no Mustafa Kemaland no War of Liberation.Rauf Orbay, Prime Minister from July 1922 to August 1923, couldnot stomach the abolition of the Caliphate; he parted company vvithAtatürk and they vvere never reconciled. Shortly after he resigned asPrime Minister, a friend met him in the street and asked if there vvas anytruth in the rumour that he vvas going to become Prime Minister again.Rauf grovvled, 'If I had my vvay I'd become Grand Vizier.' Yet years afterAtatürk's death this same Rauf Orbay told a gathering vvhich includedthree distinguished generals, Refet Bele, Kâzım Karabekir and Ali FuatCebesoy, 'If none of us had been there, Mustafa Kemal vvould stili havevvon the vvar, but if he had not been there vve could never have done it.'To vvhich vve might add that if that vvar had not been vvon, Turkeyvvould have been reduced to a small principality in Central Anatolia. Herfrontiers vvould have been as specified in the Treaty of Sevres, signed bythe Sultan's government on 10 August 1920. Edirne and most of Thracevvould lie outside those frontiers, as vvould İzmir and Antalya and their* St. Antony's College, Oxford.781
