Egypt's attitude tovvards the vvar of Turkey's Independance(1920-1923).In spite of the British occupation of Egypt and the Egyptianquestion.Egypt could not stand a loof from the events in Anatolia. TheTimes Newspaper (13th March, 1922) confessed that the relations betweenEgypt and Turkey were as strong as ever, for Egyptians hold goodfeelings to their co-religionsists the Turks 13. These good feelings wereshared by ali segments of the Egyptian society. Furthermore, the Egyptianswere irritated by the British support of the Greeks against theTurks.In Mid, April 1921, the Egyptian "Express" paper saluted Anatoliafor its heroic achievements, "Egypt being the sister-country of aliOriental countries, greets and lauds the Anatolians with heartfelt emotions.'"4This article of the "Express" was representative of feelings of ali theEgyptian people. After the victory of 'The Great Leader", The local Moqattampaper issued the results of that victory in Alexsandria city, as amodel for ali other Egyptian big cities. It should be noted, here, that asubstantial Greek Community had been living in Alexandria since theearly days of Alexander the Great. Both Egyptians and Syrians in AlexandriaCelebrated that vvonderful Turkish victory över the Greeks' 5 .It was an open secret now that Greece was only a tool in the hands ofGreat Britain. The Greeks in Alexandria were well-aware of the fact thatthe Greek Government was dragged to vvar vvithout popular support. Theevidence for that is the fact that many Greeks recruits deserted the battlefıeld, and sought help from the Egyptian authorities 16 .Moreover, a delegation from the "National Party of Egypt" had travelledto istanbul and <strong>Ankara</strong> to congratulate the Turkish people on thpeirvictories 17 .
