The creator of Bangladesh Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman,the Father of the Nation, was largely inspired by Atatürk's secular politics.In his struggle to win equal rights for Bangaless within Pakistan, hecarried on a secular campaign. He championed the equal rights of ali citizensirrespective of caste, creed or religion. After the birth of Bangladeshas a sovereign, independent country on 16 December 1971, the Constitutionof Bangladesh was adopted in 1972. It had four pillars. The most importantstate pillar vvas secularism. It is a matter of deep regret that follovvingthe assasination of the Father of the Nation along vvith his entirefamily and close political colleagues on 15 August 1975, the military regimedid avvay vvith secularism from the Constitution. This has left a deepvoid vvithin the state structure of Bangladesh.I vvas fortunate to have knovvn and vvorked for the Government ofBangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Again and again he expressed hisunbounded admiration of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and expressed a desireto moidel the society of Bangladesh after Atatürk. At the end of a longstruggle for independence, vvhen Sheikh Mujibur Rahman emeged as thesole, undisputed leader of the Bangalees, some prominet Turks paid visitsto Bangladesh. They vvere Ambassador Vahap Asiroğlu, then SecretaryGeneral of the RCD. Also Çağlayangil, the Foreign Minister visited Dhakaand both vvere received very vvarmly by Sheikh Mujib. One of the happiestmoments of Sheikh Mujib's life vvas vvhen the Turkish Governmentannounced in 1974 its recognition of the independence of Bangladesh.The influence of the movement of Mustafa Kemal vvas intelsely feltin Bengal. The nobel laureate of Bengali literatüre, the great universalpoet Rabindra Nath Tagore, vvas deeply influenced by the liberal and secularideas of Mustafa Kemal. Tagore, an ardent nationalist, vvas a greatadmirer of Mustafa Kemal and vvrote in the journal "The Modern Revievv."In October 1932", Just vvhen Turkey vvas about to collapse thereappeared Mustafa Kemal Pasha. It vvas a fateful moment. Under the guidanceof a masterful personality it novv became possible to establish securely,on a normal basis and in an effıcient modern manner the compactand reduced empire vvithin narrovver boundaries."The death of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk on 10 November 1938 stunnedthe vvorld and in India and particularly the Muslims of Bengal it vvas feltvvith profound sentiments of loss of a very near and dear one, one vvhohad galvanized his nation in the fıeld of battle and later covered it vvithglory through his svveeping reforms of the entire Turkish society. Thatname had become a household name throughout India and the name vvasMustafa Kemal Atatürk. In battle he had fought successfully the combinedmight of the vvestern povvers and throvvn them out of the Turkishsoil. It vvas a successful vvar of Liberation.
