The opposition of some "heads" of department, tovvhom the ill-begotten law ot University Reform has entrusted exeessivepower, coupled by the force of the Hispanic inertia (if not Euro-centrist),can partly account for the production shortage I pointed out before. Ashortage which does not overshadow the good international journalism of"La Vanguardia de Barcelona" and "EL Pais"; nor the lucid "Revista dePolitica Exterior" of Madrid's INCIPE 3 .If we momentarily confine ourselves to the century-old Turkey -vvhich is presently at one of the ciritcal crossroads that this country has alwaysbeen exposed to due to the internal complexity of its history and thedeterminant role that its geographical location subjects it to-we can easilynotice, without straining much our attention, that Turkish literatüre, essaysand histography vvhich had some vveight and tradition in the Spanishletters, have lately lost signifıcance. From a Journey to Turkey (1557) tothe adventures of Domingo Badia -commonly knovvn by the pseudonymof Ali Bey- during the ruling of Clarles IV; from the pages that Blascolbânez consecrated to the Turkish-Ottoman Empire early in this centuryto the highly scholarly vvorks of Ambassador Emilio Garrigues fırst in1962 (A diplomatic slip of the tongue) and aftervvards in 1976 (SecondJourney to Turkey), the Spanish tradition of cultivating Turkish mattersseems to have paled. Not to mention the Catalan-Aragonese involvementin the development of events in the Mediterranean Levant, as it happenedin 1623, vvhen the chronicler and historian Francisco de Moncad gave tothe print his famous "Expedition... against Greeks and Turks", or as itvvas the case vvith Francesc Cambö, vvho made public in his Visions d'Orient(1924) the onset of the Kemalist phenomenon in the convulsive politicallandscape of the period betvveen vvars 4 .The efforts of a fevv young -and some already matured ones- Spanishseholars are making possible that this Turkish tradition vvhich has survivedin Spain somevvhat spontaneously, vvill remain alive-and make itvisible-Spanish book-shops and catalogues 5 .3.
