GARCIA GOMEZ, A VALUABLE CLOG IN THEMEDITERRANEAN POLİCY OF SPAIN IN THEMIST OF THE COLD WARProf. Dr. Victor Morales LEZCANO*It won't be hyperbole to start this essay by stating that, in Spain, Histographyand some Social Sciences -such as Maghrebology and the studyof Political and Social Systems from a historical perspective and in comparativeterms, just to mention a couple of examples that I am acquaintedwith- are progressively conquering new horizons on a wide range of issuesand attaining fairly commendable achievements.I have recently struck a comprehensive balance of that conquest andthose achievements confming myself to the Spanish bibliographical productiondealing with the Maghreb for the last ten years. I believe to havenoticed that it has both experienced a remarkable growth as well as developeda more profound sensibility in the experts taking an interest on thepast and present of the nations clustered along the southern border of ourcountry 1 . That is, those vvho live-and in the sense instilled in the word byAmerico Castro, vvho also "suffer" - in the lands of the Müslim West delimitedby Algeria and Mauritania, the tvvo African neighbours of the MoroccanKingdom and the Western Sahara.Sticking always to the fîeld of the tvvo above-mentioned academicsubjects, one has to acknovvledge, that the Spanish bibliographic productionon the past and present of the societies living in the Eastern Meditteraneanbasin has dvvindled in numbers but not in quality.I beg your pardon for the immodesty, but I also drevv attention indue course 2 to the lack of solid and steady researching in our Universities* Spanish Open University, Madrid.1.
