THE PERCEPTION OF KEMALİSM IN GERMANJOURNALISM SİNCE THE END OF THE COLDWARTamer BACINOĞLU*IFor Turkey, the German Federal Republic represents one of the mostimportant countries in Europe. Numerous German tourists, for vvhom Antalyaand istanbul have become long familiar names, the NATO alliance,and an intensive trade relationship bear vvitness to the special relationshipbetvveen Germany and Turkey, even if the nature of this relationship isperceived differently in each country. Of great importance to the German-Turkish relationship is the fact that Germany has become a home forroughly 2.5 million Turks. De facto, Germany has become a country opento immigration -in particular for the Turks once considered as 'guestvvorkers' and itinerant laborers- although the German leadership is loathto admit this. Against this backdrop, it is not surprising that a great dealof interest is directed at Turkey in German journalism. A cursory glanceat book offerings and other journalistic media shows that this interest is.1) oriented to both domestic and foreign affairsand2) in most cases is problem-oriented.In light of the fact that the majority of German Turks retain strongties to their country of origin, the inner-Turkish political discussion attractsgreat interest in the FRG. Added to this is the fact that radical Turkishmovements, officially termed in Germany as 'extremism by foreigners',have formed and flourished in Germany, thanks not least to theextensive infrastructure. There they have a large room for maneuver andhave been able to make the country into the center for political agitation.As a result, it is possible, even though vvith some exaggeration, to speakUniversity of Tübingen.817
