In a letter addressed to Minister Castiella, he vvrote alively description of the latter:"No sight is more interesting than inönü. This man vvho is somevvhatthe living history of Turkey, because he is contemporary or even olderthan Atatürk, and vvho has been in everything a man can aspire to be inTurkey, both as a civilian as vvell as in the military life, is an extraordinarycharacter. Nobody vvould believe that an eighty-year old man canencompass such amazing activity and such capacity of maneuvre, givingthe stick and the carrot, combining so dextrerously the fox vvith thelion'" 8 .Do bear in mind that över the fıfties Kemalism had shovvn unequivocalsigns of anachronism. The bronze lavv inexorably turned out to be trueonce again: the social and economic transformations that Turkey vvitnessedin the postvvar, gave the victory to Adnan Menderes' DemocraticParty at the general elections of May 1950. indeed, Menderes and his partytried to put the agricultural and bureaucratic Turkey into the path of asociety moving tovvards a mixed economy -State and private ovvnedmeans of production-, vvith the peasantry moving to big cities; and plungeit into the international dynamic of the Cold War, vvith the integration ofTurkey into NATO (1952) and the Baghdad Pact (1954). That is, in vvhatthe Pentagon called "the contention dike" against communism along theSoviet territory bordering vvith Turkey itself, Iran and Pakistan, ali ofthem gathered under the auspices of Great Britain formerly, and, later onsince1959- under the umbrella of the United States of America 19 .When Garcıa Gömez landed in Turkey and throughout the sevenyears that he held the ambassadorship of Spain in Turkey, the People'sRepublic Party of the senile İnönü -later on replaced by Ecevit-had managedto vvrench from the Menderes's hordes the hegemony över the ballotingboxes through not alvvays transparent, much less fair, means.Revenge in the game of political interests, is as the hazardous tricksthat History plays vvith peoples: purely vvhimsical. In conformity vviththis lavv (if it indeed is), Garcıa Gömez could moreover contemplate hovvsince 1965 a political "vvild boar" -as Ortega y Gasset vvould had put itcameout the vvinner at the poll.
