there is one vowel phoneme more than in Turkish (/e/ vs. /ae/). Due tothis fact the Latinized Turkish spelling is not directly suitable for Tatar, for these reasons a number of Tatars in Finland wanted to replace theirlanguage vvith Turkish; they imported text books from Turkey and vvereinclined to join the political Pan-Turkish movement. This discrepancyvvas also reflected in the names of the community. 'Turks of Finland' isthe designation supported by the last-mentioned group. 'Turkish-Tatars'vvas quite usual a couple of decades ago; at present the designation 'Tatars'is in fashion again-although it stili demands additional explanationsfor people less familiar vvith these matters. An additional name to bementioned is the 'Volga Turks'. This controversy led to diffîculties in theschool system too.In Tampere religious activities consist of regular Friday prayers, celebrationof religious feasts, especially Ramazan and Korban, feasts ofname-giving, vveddings and funerals. The High Holidays convene 70-80people, i.e. in practice the vvhole congregation. Mr. Baibulat, as suceessorto his father, leads these services; they are conducted in Arabic vvith varioustraditional modes of recitation. AMüslim must act in favour of his religion, and there vvas no religion onthe other side. And our people had been subdued suffıciently över there;for us there vvas no diffıculty to go to the vvar". Then Tatars vvere killed inaction, three of them vvere offıcers. The Association of War Veterans ofthe islam Congregation in Finland is an active organization even today.Novvadays in daily life, islam is not considered to be a problem. Iquote Mr. Baibulat and Mr. Neuman: "We are pleased that vve can observethe religion of islam, and nevertheless, vve live in a rather modernvvay"; "a completely normal life". "When in a country, do quite a lot asthe countrymen do". Among the dietary rules, the prohibition of pork isstrictly observed. The circumcision of boys has been retained as the normalcustom. "A lovv profile", i.e. an attempt to take care of internal mattersvvithout arousing too much attention among the Finnish majority hasbeen a part and parcel of the Tatar vvay of life, and this independence istrue concerning the finances of the congregations, too.The publishing activity of the small community is vvorthy of respect. In seventy years (since 1925) two hundred items have appeared in Finlandin Tatar-printed partly in the Arabic and partly in the Latin characters, some of them in both.
