on the Galipoli Peninsula before and after Anzac Day. How encouragingwould it be if young male and female Turkish students and vvorkerscould, in reasonable numbers, visit Australia and learn something of ourproblems and that feeling for the country, its ancient and modern past andits complexities that only a favoured few tourists now enjoy? Then, too, although Australia since 1942 has been intimately involvedvvith the United States, the declining mother country Great Britain, and East Asia, we have neglected some of our historical legacies andduties. As a middle povver we have tended to adapt short-term fashionsand solutions rather than invest in long-term and more complex relationships. Both Turkey and Australia have much to gain from a strengtheningof bilateral contacts wich can range from expanded archaeological concerns, shared historical experiences and multi-cultural interfaces. Finally, this visit to Turkey will be the third by a Waterson in 83years. The first episode, that of my father vvith the Nevv Zeland ExpeditionaryForce from 25 April 12 September 1915 vvas, from the Britishpoint of view, a great failure. From the Turkish perspective the episodevvas a tremendous military triumph and more importantly, began that politicaland personal transformation vvhich fuelled Kemal Atatürk's rise asone of the greatest and most creative figures of the 20th century. The secondsojourn vvas my ovvn visit to your country in 1989 - an investigationboth historically stimulating and emotionally confronting. But I should fınish vvith one of the great panegyrics of the recent pastvvhich shovvs magnanimity, statesmanship and historical perxception rarein this century of much intolerance, greed, irresponsibility and violence. We are ali familiar vvith those great vvords of Kemal Atatürkinscribed on tvvin stele at Ari Burnu:Those heroes vvho shed their blood and lost their lives, you are now lying in thesoil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference betvveenthe Johnnies and the Mehemets to us vvhere they lie side by side in this countryof ours. You, the mothers vvho sent their sons from far away countries vvipe avvayyour tears, your sons are novv lying in our bosom and are in peace. After havinglost their lives on this land they become our sons as vvell.BooksSELECT BIBLIOGRAPHYAhmad, Feroz, The Making of Modern Turkey, London, 1993; The Turkish Experiment inDemocracy, 1950-75, London, 1977.Akçelik, Rahmi, (ed.), Before and After Gallipoli, Melbourne, 1986.Aspinall-Oglander, C.F., Official History of the Great War.
