At the 1991 general elections, the Welfare Party won 17 % of thevotes and took 40 seats at the Grand National Assembly. Subsequently,on 27 March 1994, the party won in local elections in istanbul and <strong>Ankara</strong>while the winner of the İzmir local elections for the seat of mayor vvasa former Welfare Party member. At the time, Welfare vvas expected towin 20 % of the votes in the elections estimated to be held in 1996. If thisvvere realised, a tripartite coalition, formed vvith the support of pro-Islamic members of the Motherland Party and the True Path Party, vvasexpected. This vvould be a severe blovv to Kemalist laicism. The religiousfundamentalists had infıltrated the civil service and state institutions. Pro-Kemalist İlhan Selçuk revealed that they vvere especially entrenched inthe Ministry of Education and the Religious Affairs Directorate 7 .It is believed that Turkey vvill solve economic problems such as inflationand unemployment and political problems such as the PKK Kurdishterrorism. But Turkey's gravest problem lay in the ambitions of thereligious fundamentalists to acquire povver under the guise of democracy.In this respect, the President of the Constitutional Court, Yekta GöngörÖzden in an intervievv vvith Günaydın nevvspaper on 13 September 1994commented that the danger created by exploitation of religious sensimentsin Turkey vvas a more serious issue than either terrorism or economicproblems.Those politicians vvho had, betvveen 1945 and 1994, manipulated islamdemagogically tovvard achieving political ends have been identifıedas Menderes, Demirel and Ecevit 8 , Ozal could also be added to this list.In daily life, religious issues stili constitute the strongest platform of thepolitical parties. While the main parties entertain a placatory stance tovvardsWelfare for, perhaps, possible political partnership, pro-Islamicmembers compromise Kemalist principles to appeal to the electorate ofWelfare.To prevent the dangers posed by the religious fundamentalists, Kemalistsmust ünite. The Motherland and True Path Parties must clear theirmembership of fundamentalist elements, and must not refrain from enteringcoalition partnerships vvith the Social-Democratic parties. Hence, asin the case of the True Path Party and the Social Popülist Party, the RepublicanPeople's Party and the Democratic Left Party can cooperate.After the demişe of Turgut Özal in 1993, a movement of YoungTurks emerged on the political scene. Also vvith the resignation of Erdalİnönü from the Social Popülist Party a nevv band of politicians emerged,those vvho strive not to repeat old mistakes and regard the necessity of de-7.
