Kamal dayvvas observed on 18th November in Calcutta and different parts of Bengal.The Mourning day vvas observed by holding condolence meetingsand offering Fateha in mosques. The greatest tribute vvas paid by vvorldpoet Rabindra Nath Tagore, vvho vvas deeply saddened by his death. In acondolence meeting at his ovvn university Shantiniketon he stated "Turkeyvvas once called the sick man of Europe until Kemal came and set beforeus an example of nevv Asia vvhere living present recalled the gloriesof a dead past... Kamal Pasha's heroism vvas not on the battlefıeld only,he vvaged a relentless vvar against the tyranny of bilind superstition vvhichperhaps is the deadliest enemy a people have to contend against. To hisovvn people he vvas a great deliverer, to us he should remain a great example".Mujibur Rahman Khan, a noted journalist in his article "Kamalbad"(the principles of Kemalism) gave a detailed survey of the far reachingimpact of the ideas and reforms of Atatürk. He voiced the sentiments ofhis countrymen thus: "Today's India divided and plagued by ignorance,prej udice and fanaticism, eagerly avvaits the advent of an epoch makingleader like Kemal to lead her". Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman'sattachment to the person of Atatürk can be gauged from the fact that henamed his son Kemal. Alas! he too vvas gunned dovvn on the fateful nightof 15 August 1975.As I stand before this distinguished audience I cannot help reflectingthat the last 45 years of my life have passed in intimate contact vvith thisgreat country and its very great people. Let me begin vvith the beginning.I arrived here in 1953 and on the night of my arrival in istanbul on 26January, the city vvas rocked by earthquake. Again in 1953 the mortal remainsof Mustafa Kemal Atatürk vvere transferred vvith a moving ceremonyto its final resting place in Çankaya, in the capital, vvhich he createdsingle handed.I have met numerous historical personalities of Turkey. When I startedmy career as Press Attache of Pakistan Embassy in istanbul in 1953 Imet Bülent Ecevit, currently Deputy Prime Minister. He used to vvork forUlus in <strong>Ankara</strong>. We have talked often about Tagore and the traditionalculture of the Indian subcontinint. After my departure from Turkey in1958 I sent him a letter in vvhich I expressed my belief that one day Ivvould see him in high places. In 1974 vvhen he bacame Prime Minister Ivvas Bangladesh Ambassador in Algiers. I sent him a message of congratulationsto vvhich he responded. I vvas a regular visitor to Rauf Orbay,vvho lived in a modest apartment on Atatürk Boulevard in istanbul. He736
