who had just recendy (end of May) surrendered to the French. It was agood guess to try to see further what was the material published by thisnewspaper in an attempt to determine what information was available inTurkey, at least to the readership of this nevvspaper about the events ofthe Rif.This leads us to wonder what kind of paper Vakit vvas, and whowrote in it, at least about Morocco.Vakit 18 vvas founded by Ahmet Emin and Mehmet Asim in November1917. Both men had vvorked in another nevvspaper, Sabah, as editörin chief and vvriter, respectively. As such, they vvere closely acquaintedwith world affairs in the troubled years of the vvar and its aftermath. AhmetEmin vvent for intance to Germany to cover the vvar events there. Afterthe occupation of istanbul in November 1918 by the Allies forces inapplication of Mudros Armistice (30 October), Emin vvas one of theTurkish elite members who opposed in one way or another, foreign occupation.Military commanders, political leaders, representatives and nevvspaperwriters or editors like Emin vvere banished by the British to Malta.Vakit continued publicaton under Mehmet Asim's responsibility. Thenevvspaper had already earned a vvide popularity by attacking the malversationsof some high ranking officials in the Ottoman government of thelast months of the vvar. In the confused months follovving Mudros, Vakit, under the direction of Asim, shovved some sympathy to the Anadolumovement and its leader, Mustafa Kemal, vvhom it stili called Pasha, despitethe ruling of Damat Ferit's government to the effect that it vvas aerime to apply this title to Kemal or his companions. Asim vvas frequentlysummoned before authorities and courts, ineluding the martial court. This brought the nevvspaper eloser to the Kemalist circles in istanbul, especiallyto ismet Pasha, later named Inonu, vvith vvhom Asim maintaineda elose relationship vvell into the Republic era. 19This short incursion in Turkish press history vvas necessary to shedsome light on the keen interest of Vakit in the Rif events in the mid1920s. For vvant of an exaustive consultation of Vakit issues betvveen1921-1926, I cannot asses the frequency nor the importance of coveragethe nevvspaper devoted to the Rifian movement and political structure.Nor can I assess the range of interest in other Turkish nevvspapers of thetime. Yet, the sustained coverage of the developments of the Rifian vvar, evolving from a vvar betvveen the Rif and Spain to one betvveen the Rif18. I would like to thank both Süleyman Tugral and Abdelhafıd Tbaili for their help withobtaining copies of some of Vakit articles about the Rif. Tugral further helped withtranslating some of them into Arabic.19. For more details about Vakit and its performance both prior to and under the Republic, see Nuri Inugur, Türk Basın Tarihi, istanbul: Gazeteciler Cemiyeti, 1992, pp.32-35.649
